Senior Panel on Aging: Medicare Scams, Estate Planning, and Funeral Pre-Planning

As a health and life insurance agent, I attended the Senior Panel on Aging hosted by Senior Advocate and held at a local church. I had advertised our services in the program information and was curious to see how the handouts were received and how people interacted with them. Little did I know that the panel would provide me with eye-opening information on various topics such as the Senior Medicare Patrol in VA, common healthcare scams, estate planning with an attorney, Alzheimer’s and home healthcare information, and even funeral planning.

The panel started with informative sessions on the Senior Medicare Patrol in VA  which aimed to educate seniors about Medicare fraud and how to protect themselves from healthcare scams. It was eye-opening to learn about the prevalence of healthcare scams targeting seniors and the importance of being vigilant in protecting their Medicare benefits. The session provided valuable insights and practical tips on how to detect and report potential scams, empowering seniors to be proactive in safeguarding their healthcare rights.

The estate planning session with an attorney was equally informative. The attorney shared insights on the importance of having a comprehensive estate plan in place, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advance directives. The session emphasized the significance of planning ahead and making informed decisions about estate distribution, healthcare decisions, and financial matters. It highlighted the importance of seeking professional legal advice and tailoring estate plans to individual needs and circumstances.

The sessions on Alzheimer’s and home healthcare information was particularly relevant as it shed light on the challenges faced by seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. The session provided valuable information on home healthcare options, resources, and support services available for seniors with Alzheimer’s, and the importance of early detection and intervention. It was a poignant reminder of the impact of Alzheimer’s on individuals and families, and the need for compassionate care and support for those affected.

However, it was the presentation by the funeral home on funeral planning that left me both surprised and concerned. The presenter emphasized that life insurance is for life and not just for covering funeral expenses, and that relying solely on life insurance for funeral expenses may have limitations. The presenter suggested pre-planning and pre-paying with the funeral home as a more reliable option for funeral arrangements. While I appreciated the information provided, I couldn’t help but feel that it was skewed towards promoting the funeral home’s services and pre-payment plans.

As a life insurance agent, I strongly believe that with the right life insurance policy and coverage amount, it is possible to adequately cover funeral expenses and more. Life insurance can provide a financial safety net for families, ensuring that funeral expenses are taken care of without causing additional financial burden during an already difficult time. It’s essential to carefully review and understand the terms and coverage of a life insurance policy, and work with a insurance agent to ensure that the policy meets individual needs and provides adequate protection.

Despite my disagreement with everything in the funeral home presentation, the Senior Panel on Aging was a valuable and informative event. It highlighted the importance of being proactive in planning for our future as we age, including healthcare, estate planning, and funeral pre-planning. It was a reminder of the need to be vigilant against healthcare scams, seek professional legal advice for estate planning, and be informed about the options and resources available for Alzheimer’s and home healthcare. The panel also sparked a renewed passion in me to update and enhance The Black Folder Project end-of-life planning training plan and ensuring that it provides accurate, comprehensive, and unbiased information to help others make informed decisions about their future.

The experience also reinforced my commitment to providing unbiased and comprehensive information to my clients as a health and life insurance agent. I believe that it’s essential to educate seniors about their options and empower them to make informed decisions about their healthcare and financial well-being. As I continue to serve my clients, I will ensure that my handouts and information are transparent, unbiased, and aimed at helping them make the best decisions for their individual needs.
